Hundreds with the killer condition signed an open letter urging an increase in support. Rob was joined by fellow sufferers ex-Liverpool FC star Stephen Darby and the former West Midlands police chief Chris Johnson.

Mr Darby said: “UK researchers are doing amazing things with little funding and this boost would help to speed things up.”

The campaign, backed by the Sunday Express, has won the support of Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.
